Episode 043 - Epic Film Guys: Resurgence
Thursday Apr 28, 2016
Thursday Apr 28, 2016
RESURGENCE! That's the word of the day as we review not one, but two trailers with that subtitle in tonight's Epic Previews segment. We look at the only-being-released-in-Japan Toho reboot of Godzilla with Godzilla: Resurgence, and the twenty-years-in-the-making sequel to Independence Day, Independence Day: Resurgence. We'll also take a look at The Magnificent Seven teaser as well as the final trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse.
More and more tragedy seems to strike the world of entertainment these days, and none so big as the loss of music legend Prince. In this episode we'll feature three pieces from his illustrious career, two of them from the Batman 1989 soundtrack - "Trust" and "Partyman," while the third will close out the show in the form of "When Doves Cry." Justin also has a few words to say about this iconic star as we bid him a fond farewell.
Also this week, we look back at my bachelor party from last weekend and talk about the fun shenangians that ensued throughout the weekend, from the head of Patrick Swayze to watching half of Roadhouse. All in all a great weekend, but my voice certainly paid the price.

We had the opportunity and privilege to check out the latest of Disney's live-action film adaptations, this time in Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book. We couldn't weigh in on this one alone, however, so we are proud to welcome the host of the Ten Bucks a Throw Podcast, Bryan Loy, to help us review one of the year's best films thusfar.
In our Epic Previews segment tonight, we'll be reviewing the trailer for Nicholas Winding Refn's newest film, Neon Demon. It was a pretty slow week for trailers leading up to the recording, so be sure to check back next week for more great new trailers!
The theater industry is something near and dear to us here on the Epic Film Guys podcast, since we spend so much time in theaters watching movies. The experience is nigh unreplaceable, as far as we are concerned. Yet, with announcements of late that a theater chain even considered (and quickly rescinded) texting in the theaters and, as Sean Parker's Screening Room gains supporters and detractors, is the theatrical experience on its way out? We'll discuss the controvery surrounding Parker's latest venture and what impact it might have on the industry.

Marvel v. DC!! With the release of Batman v Superman a few weeks ago and the impending release of Captain America: Civil War, the fanboys are at a fever pitch, throwing insults across the aisle at one another and their respective franchises. With the critical thrashing that BvS received and the extremely vocal minority of fans and audiences that hated it, everyone was quick to seize upon any news that DC's plans were crumbling before their very eyes. We took a week off from the superhero fare, but now we're ready to jump into the fray and dispel the falsehoods and embrace the truths and examine the state of the DCEU and the MCU. Are those Suicide Squad reshoot rumors a knee-jerk reaction? What else is DC changing in the wake of BvS? With advanced word that Civil War is the "best Marvel film yet," can DC recover from two very divisive films? Justice League started filming three days ago, with Snyder once again at the helm. Is the DCEU safe under his leadership?
Ever the cinephile, Justin had the opportunity to check out Hardcore Henry and went to an advanced screening of Green Room this past week. We'll get his thoughts and reviews of both films in a brand new segment, Justin's Cinema Beat! Whenever Justin gets a chance to check out a film at an advanced screening, we'll feature all of his reviews right here.
Speaking of segments, in the Epic Previews segment tonight we'll be discussing two of the biggest trailers to land over the past two weeks- the "blitz" trailer for Suicide Squad and the teaser for Rogue One: A Star Wars story, which may be the worst film title of any film in recent memory. We'll also discuss the Doctor Strange trailer, which was scheduled to land during the recording of the podcast.

Episode 040 - His Beard is made of Shredded Wheat!
Thursday Apr 07, 2016

What are YOU drinking? Last week during our Batman v Superman review, we announced that we'd be temporarily postponing the segment in the lead-up to my wedding next month. After a very vocal fanbase cried out to keep the segment in place, I decided to run a poll on our twitter page, and you responded with a resounding: KEEP DRINKING!! With over 75% of the votes in the affirmative, "What're you drinkin'?" will remain the opening segment of the Epic Film Guys podcast for a long time to come, and we'll just have to cut out a few drinks elsewhere to make up for it.
Speaking of our fans, through twitter this week I asked for listeners to submit questions, and we did get a few to respond to! We'll discuss films that we'd refuse to watch under penalty of death, as well as our best & worst theater-going experiences and potential villains for Man of Steel 2, which we're less and less likely to get with the critical thrashing Batman v Superman received.
This week will see the return of our Epic Previews segment, in which we'll be taking a look at a few trailers that have landed since last time we did the segment. We review the Lego Batman teasers, the newest trailer for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, the surreal comedy Swiss Army Man starring Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Dano, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Blood Father, the Jean-François Richet directed thriller starring Mel Gibson and William H. Macy.
Speaking of Mel Gibson, we'll also briefly discuss his currently-in-post-production Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Gibson and starring himself with Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving & Gibson himself. Garfield plays WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Last, but most certainly not least, we finish off this episode with the long-awaited second part of our Batman 1989 commentary! We'll be putting the finishing touches on the second half of the film and releasing the entire commentary very shortly in the future. In the meantime, if there are other commentary tracks you'd love to hear us on, let us know! We'll be happy to record them for your listening pleasure.
As mentioned toward the end of the show, please take a moment and visit https://www.etsy.com/shop/thegnomeworkshop and support my friends Brian and Kim by buying their book! It is personalized with the child's name, and is an adorable story with original artwork. Please help share the love for them!
