Episode 039 - Is Batman v. Superman REALLY that bad?
Thursday Mar 31, 2016
Thursday Mar 31, 2016
"Twenty years in Gotham, how many good guys are left? How many stayed that way?" We couldn't have predicted it at the time, but Zack Snyder managed to make a film even more divisive than his 2013 Man of Steel with the follow-up, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which serves the dual purpose of being a sequel to Man of Steel while introducing elements for a DC comics shared cinematic universe, including Batman and Wonder Woman. The critics have lambasted it, but its box office is still doing well and the audience seems to be reacting much more positively.
In this full episode review, Nick and Justin dissect Batman v Superman to its very core to get to the heart of its characters and its story. We'll take a look at the criticisms swirling around the film and address them as necessary, as well as offering our own. We also address our favorite things about the film before stamping it with a rating that rarely ever happens on this podcast. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!

Episode 038 - Why we Love Man of Steel
Wednesday Mar 23, 2016
Wednesday Mar 23, 2016
Today is a day for truth... the truth about our love of Zack Snyder's very divisive 2013 mega blockbuster Man of Steel. Suffice to say myself and Justin love this film, and while others may disagree, we took it upon ourselves to lay out several of the criticisms most-often cited in this film and dissect them one at a time. I also asked twitter what their one biggest criticism of the film was, and we take some time to address them- or at the very least, have a good laugh at them.
Though our Man of Steel discussion takes up a majority of the runtime, it is not alone! We also take a look at the Captain America: Civil War trailer in this week's Epic Previews, and we'll discuss the news of a fifth Indiana Jones film, which has re-opened many old wounds regarding the last film in the franchise.
Last but not least, I want to personally thank @mpearce6, @YogurtPodcast, @roelsantosjr, @BrentleyDOliver, @reelcomicheroes, @TheMidside, and our great friend Paul @thecountdownpc for contributing to our Man of Steel show with an audio clip discussing their love (or lack thereof) for the film. Also, a huge thanks to everyone who responded on twitter!
And if you're hearing this on release day, dear listener, then I am in Virginia with Epic Film Guy Justin and we'll be seeing Batman v Superman at 7:00 PM. Our FULL Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice review episode will land next week with a lot of fun surprises that I hope to put together. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!

Minisode 002 - Our Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane!
Monday Mar 21, 2016
Monday Mar 21, 2016
It's time for another Epic Film Guys mini-sode! Our episode lengths have been going a little long lately, so rather than cram our review of 10 Cloverfield Lane into the full show coming this Thursday, we decided to drop it today as a special treat for all of you out there. So please check it out and let us know what you thought of this movie! Suffice to say we both quite enjoyed it, and we hope you do too.
Our normal episode will drop this Thursday and it is all about Man of Steel, as we finish up our Batman & Superman retrospectives on the day that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice opens up in theaters. We'll be there opening night, and after we see it the second time the next morning we'll be sitting down to record an in-depth review. Stay tuned, and we'll see you at the movies!

Episode 037 - Let's Put a Smile on that Face!
Thursday Mar 17, 2016
Thursday Mar 17, 2016
"You're the one pointing the gun Harvey; so point it at the people responsible." After Batman & Robin laid a huge egg at the box office, Batman vanished from theaters for nearly ten years until he was rebooted in 2005's Batman Begins, from mostly indie auteur Christopher Nolan. Ten years and billions in box office later, his Dark Knight Trilogy is lauded as a pinnacle in superhero cinema and cinema in general, earning the first and only Academy Award win for acting for a superhero film. As the Joker so rightly says- and Justin also eagerly points out- "You've changed things. Forever. There's no goin' back." While it has become somewhat fashionable of late to hate on Nolan's Batman, rest assured that no one here is going to drag them through too much mud.
This episode was far too big to do alone, however, so we called on our friends and brothers in podcasting, the Countdown Movie and TV reviews podcast, to help us rate these films and discuss their finer (and lesser) points. We are also joined in-studio by a good friend of mine and a big fan of Batman, Mr. Brentley Oliver! Thank you very much to Paul, Wayne, and Brentley for being on the show and helping us out with today's show.
Also this week, we're going to take a look at Bryan Singer's oft-derided Superman Returns, and attempt to answer the questions that have nagged this film and its production for a decade. Was it a sequel? Reboot? Remake? No matter what it was, the most important thing to note is it was not a success, which killed Superman as a franchise until Zack Snyder's Man of Steel was released in 2013. Yet, it does have its redeeming qualities for most of us, so we'll examine all of it here.
Next week's episode will be our final show before the release of Batman v. Superman, and since Justin is seeing it early, we're recording a week early to avoid any spoilers. We'll be reviewing 10 Cloverfield Lane as well as the latest trailer for Captain America: Civil War, and we're taking a look back at Man of Steel and responding to YOUR criticisms of that film in a very special retrospective.

Episode 036 - Batman Live Commentary & Retrospective!
Thursday Mar 10, 2016
Thursday Mar 10, 2016
"I want you to do me a favor: I want you to tell all your friends about me." This week is a very special podcast for both myself and Justin as we finally sat down and recorded our feature-length commentary for Tim Burton's iconic Batman. This is a commentary we've wanted to do for years, but we could just never get the stars to align. Hear the first part today and look forward to the next part in an upcoming show. Once we've aired all four parts, you'll be able to listen to the entire live commentary when we drop that file all on its own!
As we continue to count down the days leading up to Batman v Superman, we turn our attention from the man of steel to the dark knight this week and focus on all things Batman! We're reviewing each of the four films made from 1989 - 1997, from Burton's 1989 masterpiece to the trainwreck that was Schumacher's Batman & Robin. Or is it? Take a listen to our thoughts on that famously bad film and see if you agree, and don't forget to stay 'till the end!
This week we're back with a new trailer for Epic Previews, and it is the trailer that is on everyone's mind at this point- Ghostbusters. We'll break down all the important points in the trailer and address the numerous controversies surrounding this film, as well as setting the record straight against a large number of fans who are determined not to give this flick a chance. Where do you land? Join the discussion over at http://www.facebook.com/epicfilmguys!
Next week, we will be joined by our brothers Wayne and Paul from Perth for our second crossover, and this one WILL be one for the ages- we're going to dissect the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy, and as a special treat (for everyone except for Paul), we're going to be reviewing Bryan Singer's 2006 film Superman Returns. All of this leads up to our Man of Steel retrospective, which lands on the very day that we'll be seeing the sequel live.

Episode 035 - You'll Believe a Man Can Fly
Thursday Mar 03, 2016
Thursday Mar 03, 2016
"Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!" Tonight's podcast is all about the indomitable Man of Steel as played by the legendary Christopher Reeve in four different films. The legendary Marlon Brando played Jor-El, Gene Hackman hammed it up as the maniacal Lex Luthor, and Margot Kidder fawned over the last son of Krypton from the moment he arrived. The series also starred Jackie Cooper, Terence Stamp, Susannah York, Marc McClure, and many more! Tonight, it's all about SUPERMAN!
First, we'll be focusing on Richard Donner's iconic first film and the second major motion picture featuring the character of Superman (behind 1951's Superman and the Mole Men). We'll look at the good and bad features of the film, and ask whether or not the film still holds up even today. Then, we'll take a look at the sequel, Superman II. Nick forced himself to suffer through the original Richard Lester cut, but both of the guys have seen the Donner cut that was released in 2006. Which is better?
Then, we'll take a turn toward the darker days of Superman with Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. While Christopher Reeve was still in the title role and gave it his best effort, many would agree that both of these films (particularly four) destroyed the Superman brand in film and caused him to be absent from it for nearly twenty years. What went wrong with these sequels? We'll analyze them both!
Along with our analysis of all four of these films, we'll also be rating them and discussing other great aspects of the productions, such as John Williams' iconic score to the legendary Marlon Brando starring as Superman's father. And not to worry, though we are not discussing Superman Returns this week, we'll be featuring a discussion on that film in two weeks with the guys from the Countdown, Paul and Wayne.
Last but certainly not least, we'll briefly touch on our thoughts of the Oscars and of the winners and losers. Remember, you can see all of our Oscar picks and the winners at our website, http://www.epicfilmguys.com/oscars-2016. We'll also discuss Justin's appearance on the Picture Lock show last weekend, and look ahead to some upcoming appearances as well. No Epic Previews segment this week, sadly, but look for it to return next week when we tackle the upcoming trailer for Ghostbusters, which should land the same day as this podcast!
