Episode 056 - Stranger Things & Big News from SDCC!
Thursday Jul 28, 2016
Thursday Jul 28, 2016
This week, we're actually tossing movies out the window for a change as we welcome regular contributor and friend of the show, Bryan Loy, and the three of us dig into the new Netflix 80s horror thriller, Stranger Things! We've got a full review of all eight episodes of the series and we want to invite you to join us for this fantastic new show. The review is quite spoiler-filled, so if you're looking to avoid it until you finish the series yourself (which you MUST do!), then the segment runs from 15:20 to 55:00.
This week we've also got four trailers coming your way as part of Epic Previews. San Diego Comic Con was this past week, and instead of waiting for things to leak, the studios are out ahead of the game and have released the Comic Con trailers online to coincide with the event. Thus, we're going to be talking Justice League, Wonder Woman, the new trailer for Doctor Strange, and wrapping things up with the colossal Kong: Skull Island. We'll also be touching on the rest of the news from the week, including the casting of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel!
Another thing we want to announce is that we're bringing back last week's fan reviews segment because it was so popular, and it will return every week that we get clips as a regular segment we're calling FanViews! Every week, you can shoot us a quick 60-90 second review of whatever film we're reviewing for that week (or whatever you want!) and we'll include your thoughts as part of the segment. We want to thank everyone who responded positively to this segment and encourage anyone out there listening to take part in the future. Meanwhile, after weeks of harassment about the now-infamous "sausage" clip, the weekly Charles Bronson has been shelved. I'd tell you by what, but if I told you then you'd probably get no respect, no respect at all! Thanks for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!

Minisode 004 - Star Trek: Beyond: Beastie Boys ex Machina
Wednesday Jul 27, 2016
Wednesday Jul 27, 2016
Podcasting... the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Epic Film Guys podcast. Her ongoing mission: To explore strange new films... to seek out new listeners and new, exciting content... to boldly go where no podcast has gone before! This week we're talking all things Star Trek with our full review of Star Trek: Beyond, the third film in the reboot trilogy started back in 2009 with JJ Abrams' Star Trek. Abrams, of course, departed the Trek franchise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 3-6) has stepped in to take the reins.
We joined our brother podcast out of Perth, Australia for a spoiler-free review and discussion of the film this past weekend- check out that episode here. This minisode will go a bit further in depth than we did on the Countdown and we've got our full, spoiler-filled review of Star Trek: Beyond for your ears. Our normal episode will still land tomorrow morning (07/28/16), featuring a full review of the new Netflix series Stranger Things with Bryan Loy, and a breakdown of San Diego Comic-Con's flood of news and trailers in Epic Previews. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!

Nick's Full Star Trek: Beyond Review:
Star Trek: Beyond is the third film in the reboot series that began in 2009 with JJ Abrams reboot/sequel, which used an incredibly clever script to both adhere to and separate itself from the established Star Trek canon, which now spans some fifty years and another new series headed to television next year. It was a stellar film, and its sequel, Star Trek into Darkness, was even better- it flipped the script for Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan on its head, further showing how the changes to the continuity in 2009 will lead to radically different futures for the original Trek crew. It looked at the danger of a militarized Starfleet searching for war among the stars and offers a scathing criticism of the pre-emptive war mindset of the modern-day military-industrial complex.
Enter Justin Lin, of Fast & Furious 3-6 fame, to step in for the departing Abrams (who, of course, went on to Star Wars Episode VII). Three years into its five-year mission, the Enterprise stops at the Yorktown Federation outpost to take supplies. We catch up with the crew, from Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Chekov, Scotty, and Sulu; seems that Kirk is feeling as though the vastness of space is consuming him. Bones is as sarcastic and quippy as ever (Karl Urban remains the greatest casting choice in a stellar cast). Spock and Uhura are on the outs, while Chekov (the tragically late Anton Yelchin) is now taking a page from Kirk's womanizing book. Scotty is eccentric as ever, and Sulu is gay, but the film pays zero attention to this factoid- despite its condemnation by, of all people, George Takei (the original Sulu, who came out several years ago). Yet, it feels no more out of place than anything else in this film- after all, what is Star Trek if not a totally-inclusive, non-judgmental society? Now more than ever, we find this ideal incredibly present in all of our minds.
The Enterprise heads through a nebula at the behest of Kalara, who claims her ship has crashed on a planet on the other side. On passing through they are instead attacked by a swarm of small ships that make quick work of the Enterprise, because firing a photon torpedo into the swarm and shooting it to cause a big explosion or even ejecting the warp core like they did in the first friggin' moving and making that explode would be far too complicated and would work against the requirements of the plot. The crew winds up on the planet, split off into several groups, which works extremely well for the most part- Kirk and Chekov have a wonderful chemistry, but the pairing of Spock and Bones is simply brilliant every time the pair arrives on-screen.
Scotty, meanwhile, is paired with a mysterious character named Jaylah, who reveals that she too was marooned on the planet by Krall's forces some time ago, and she enlists Scotty's help to fix an old Federation ship that also crashed on the planet. We get some mysterious nuggets of dialogue that allude to a deeper backstory to her character, but the film never bothers to develop her into anything beyond a cool-looking badass who can definitely hold her own in a fight. Who is she? Who cares, that's who. She actually get a hefty chunk of screentime as well, so much so that she fights against "Manas"- Krall's right hand and the person who killed her parents, apparently- and the fight drags on and on and on. These characters aren't even remotely developed, so every moment they're on screen they make for silly, pointless moments that distract the audience from the fact that the Enterprise crew- the characters we actually care about- are in danger.
The film is the most "Star Trek" of the three films in the reboot series, and as an avid fan of TNG and DS9 it was great to see the film return to that feeling, and it should be enough to warm the heart of any Trek fan. That said, this film did its best to emulate the bad things about the worst of Trek- the worst of the original films, for example- and ends up a deflated flapping mess by the end. The Enterprise crew escapes the planet by "jump starting" a starship how? A car works by jump-starting because the wheels are contacting the ground, providing energy to the vehicle as they turn, which allows the engine to turn over and sustain itself. So how precisely does this work when a starship falls off a cliff?!
Then, the film culminates in a Deus Ex Machina set to the tune of the Beastie Boys, wherein a plot contrivance that makes absolutely no sense pops up and completely eliminates the swarm of ships in an instant, even though the plot never makes the logical connection to this outcome even when it is setting it up. Meantime, an 11th hour reveal that Krall is actually a former Starfleet captain who was once a soldier but is unable to stop living in the past has turned him into a monster, in one of the most hideously mismanaged and mangled attempts at giving the film some thematic heft before it ends. The theme wants to be about the role of the soldier in peacetime. It could have done more vis-a-vis the idea of PTSD and helping to transition soldiers into peacetime, and doubled down on the idea of peace versus perpetual war. Much more needs to be done to help soldiers with their demons from the horrors of war, to cope with their PTSD, and to help them lead normal lives. Yet this theme is tacked-on literally at the film's climax to try to stick some empathy onto the main villain who has, to this point, been a one-note "Starfleet bad" bad guy whose motivations were completely unknown to anyone.
The film does enough right by the cast of the reboot trilogy, even if it is a touch predictable (like Kirk and Spock are ever going to walk away from the Enterprise), that it still resonates, at least at times. It closes on a touching moment that will definitely tug the heart strings of any Star Trek fan, but it is too packed with ham and cheese to be the thoroughly engaging film that its predecessors were. 5/10.

Episode 055 - Ghostbusters with Girls is Good!
Thursday Jul 21, 2016
Thursday Jul 21, 2016
This week, we're far less concerned with structure and more concerned with having a great time! We'll open the show talking about our weekends, and Justin recounts his trip to Washington D.C. to meet horror legend John Carpenter. We also pay homage to James Cameron's Aliens, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary on the recording date, and to The Dark Knight, which celebrated its 8th. Some friends of the show return, and we feature a brand-new segment this week, as I edit your mini-reviews of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters.
On the heels of our commentary of the original Ghostbusters last week, this week we're diving headlong into a full review of the 2016 reboot, directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. However, we won't be doing it alone! This week we are joined by Emmy-winning film critic Jackson Murphy of Lights-Camera-Jackson! We are proud to be participating in the LCJ POD-A-THON, in which Jackson is appearing on numerous shows over a five-day period to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Before he signs off, we'll talk to him about the summer movie season thusfar and ask what he's looking forward to for the rest of 2016. Catch Jackson's full review of Ghostbusters on his website: http://lights-camera-jackson.com/ghostbusters-pg-13.php. Once Jackson signs off, we launch into a more in-depth review and discussion of the new Ghostbusters film, as I read from my written review while Justin chimes in to agree or disagree.
Thanks for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!

Episode 054 - Ghostbusters (1984) Live Commentary!
Thursday Jul 14, 2016
Thursday Jul 14, 2016
The phone-in topic Today: "Ghosts and Ghostbusting." The controversy builds, more sightings are reported, some maintain that these professional paranormal eliminators in New York are the cause of it all.
That's right film fans... as promised some time back, it's time for another audio commentary, and this week- on the release day of the reboot, no less- we're doing a full-length commentary of Ivan Reitman's immortal classic, 1984's Ghostbusters! Of course starring Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, and William Atherton, this film is a classic in absolutely every sense of the word, with unforgettable performances and a movie that is quoteable from beginning to end. It sits high atop the list of films that I have seen hundreds of times, and could watch a hundred more and never get tired of it. It is so layered with amazing comedy that it still causes movie-goers to laugh uncontrollably some thirty plus years later.
If you're trying to listen to our commentary along with the film, the audio track is synchronized with the very start of the film, so just start them both at the same time!
Some facts about Ghostbusters:
~AFI's 100 Years, 100 Laughs list... #28
~IGN's Greatest Comedy Ever in 2005.
~Funniest Movie of the past 25 Years by Entertainment Weekly in 2006.
~Total Film's readers voted the film the 44th greatest comedy of all time in 2000.
~The film was also selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2015.
~Ackroyd & Ramis originally wrote roles for John Belushi (Venkman) and John Candy (Louis Tully). John Candy did not commit to the project, which led to Rick Moranis being cast, and after Belushi died, Bill Murray came on board.
~John Candy's original concept for Louis Tully was that the character should be German, and own two dogs. These concepts were rejected, leading to Candy's rejection of the part.
~Eddie Murphy was the actor originally considered for the part of Winston.
~Slavitza Jovan played Gozer, but she did not voice her- the voice was done by Paddi Edwards.
~Slimer was intended to be a tribute to John Belushi, specifically his character Bluto from Animal House.
~Gozer was originally to have been Ivo Shandor, a slender man in a business suit, played by Paul Reubens. This was the form taken by Ivo Shandor in the video game that came out in 2009, wherein Shandor was revealed to have been the architect of the slime tunnels used in Ghostbusters II as well.
~Pauline Kael said of the film, "Murray is the film's comic mechanism ... but nobody else has much in the way of material, and since there's almost no give-and-take among the three men, Murray's lines fall on dead air."
~Ivan Reitman provided the voice of Slimer, as well as the voice of Zuul when Dana is possessed by the evil spirit.
~Mr. Stay Puft's marshmallow was actually shaving cream!
~Last year, Ernie Hudson revealed that the character of Winston was originally in the script from the beginning as an Air Force demolitions expert, but the part was trimmed considerably in the script he was given the night before shooting started. He said, "I love the character and he’s got some great lines, but I felt the guy was just kind of there. I love the movie, I love the guys. I’m very thankful to Ivan for casting me. I’m very thankful that fans appreciate the Winston character. But it’s always been very frustrating—kind of a love/hate thing, I guess."
Thanks for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!

Episode 053 - Come with me if you want the Lisp!
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
Thursday Jul 07, 2016
Come with me if you want to live. It seems only fitting that our first show of year two should mirror the first-ever show of the Epic Film Guys podcast, wherein I reviewed Terminator: Genisys. Tonight, myself and Justin step back in time and discuss what we so dearly love about the iconic Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which celebrated its 25th anniversary on July 3rd. This week, we'll be counting down our favorite five scenes from James Cameron's iconic action flick.
Regular contributor and friend of the show, Bryan Loy, makes a return appearance in this week's Cinema Beat segment as he and Justin take down The Legend of Tarzan, about which Justin makes a very bold statement. He also takes a few minutes and gives a glowing recommendation for The Shallows, which he also had a chance to check out this week.
With one year officially behind us, we're moving ahead and are happy to announce that the Epic Film Guys podcast has nothing but bigger and better things planned, and many of those plans are for current and future appearances. Our next highly-anticipated crossover with The Countdown Movie and TV reviews on their July 25th/26th show. Nick will also be appearing on a charity 24-hour livestream of Chrono Trigger by the Nickscast, a great show from three Canadian Nicks as they play through the classic SNES RPG for charity and attempt to get every single ending.
Earlier this week I appeared on the New Trick Podcast, where host Steve attempted to take me to task over my numerous rants about Marvel's villains- and actually defends Independence Day: Resurgence! I'll be a guest (again) on an upcoming episode of World of Ro where I further discussed podcasting and my passion for films (among other things), and last but not least, several weeks back we announced that we'd received an award from Lisa of the Our Story Podcast, and I actually had the chance to sit down with her and talk about the origins of the Epic Film Guys podcast and broke down our process in terms of producing and creating the show. Look for all these (and more!) great appearances coming in the next couple months! Thanks so much for listening, and we'll see you at the movies!!

Episode 052.5 - Fan Celebration 2.0 Part Two
Friday Jul 01, 2016
Friday Jul 01, 2016
At long last, Fan Celebration 2.0 has finally arrived! We answer all of your questions, fifty-six of them in all! We welcome our host and moderator, Emily of the Classy Little Podcast, back to the show to guide us through all of these amazing fan questions. We had nearly three hours of raw audio for this week's show, between the Independence Day: Resurgence review and the celebration, so we had to cut this thing into THREE episodes! The minisode dropped this past Monday, and we'll be dropping Part 1 in our normal timeslot Thursday morning, followed by Part 2 a mere twenty-four hours later.
A huge, huge thank you to everyone who submitted questions for this episode:
